NO-COST EYE ASSESSMENT FOR INFANTS TWELVE MONTHS OF AGE AND YOUNGER
The
Eyeglass Shop in Oak Park, Matthew W. Gifford O.D., The American
Optometric Association (AOA), and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care,
Inc announce a groundbreaking public health initiative, The InfantSEE
program. The Eyeglass Shop, together with The AOA and Johnson &
Johnson have joined together to create an innovative program in
which children in their first year of life may receive a one-time,
no-cost eye assessment. This service is being provided to help fill
a void in infant healthcare and to complement the routine wellness
care most children receive from their pediatricians.
The first year of life is critical to a child's development and
learning. Because of this the AOA recommends that an infants receive
their first comprehensive eye assessment before twelve months of
age, ideally between six and nine months. This assessment could
have a significant impact on the three to four million babies born
in the US every year, of which 1 in 30 will develop amblyopia (commonly
called "lazy eye") and 1 in 25 will develop strabismus
(crossed-eyes). Despite some popular beliefs children do not outgrow
conditions such as amblyopia or strabismus, left untreated these
conditions often worsen with time. Early diagnosis and treatment
of these conditions and others increases the potential for complete
recovery.
